Community Service
Community service is an important part of
the Military Cadet experience. Learning to give back to the local,
state, and national community is an integral learning and service
experience for all cadets. M.C.S.M. cadets must complete community
service as an ongoing requirement for advancement in rank. Community
service is also an American Cadet Alliance requirement.
The Military Cadets of Southern Maine are active in the following unit
level community service activities:
1. Sisters of Mercy Food Pantry: M.C.S.M.
cadets work with the Sisters of Mercy Food Pantry in the City of
Lewiston. Cadets volunteer time at the food pantry and are actively
engaged in collecting food and raising money for the food pantry. The
M.C.S.M. is a major partner with the food pantry:
- Food Collections: M.C.S.M.
cadets will collect food donations at home football games at Lewiston
High School. The cadets place
advertisements and notices in local newspapers and notices are sent
home to parents of Lewiston High School
students asking that they bring food donations to the home games and
contribute them to the Food Pantry. Unit
cadets, in uniform, staff a booth at the entrance to the field to
collect donations. All food collected is to benefit the
food pantry.
On Home Coming 2007 the cadets will coordinate the collection of food
by all athletic teams at the high school.
- Service: Cadets assist the
food pantry by volunteering time assisting staff at the pantry.
2. Appalachian Mountain Club: Beginning
the Spring of 2008, the Military Cadets of Southern Maine will adopt a
section of the Appalachian Trail, providing trail maintenance under the
supervision of AMC staff. Cadets will maintain the trail section and
assume responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and repair.
3. Adopt-A-Spot
4. Holiday Food and Gift Drive
